Garden Room vs Extension: Which Is Right For You?

An extension changes your house. A garden room adds an entirely new one. That distinction matters more than most homeowners initially realise.

Extensions are often the right choice when you need to reshape how your existing rooms flow into each other — a larger kitchen, a connected dining space. But when what you're really after is separation — a place to work undisturbed, to practice yoga without children wandering through, to host without disrupting the rest of the house — a standalone garden room usually serves that purpose far better.

There's also the disruption to consider. A garden room project rarely touches the fabric of your existing home, meaning daily life continues largely undisturbed throughout.

If what you need is a place to work without distraction, to train, to practise, to make noise, or to see clients, a garden room is often the better fit. It's also a strong option if your house would be difficult to extend, for example because of its layout, a small plot beside the house, or the cost of altering the existing structure.
